What is Genocide?

Genocide is a tragic event that many people have suffered over the years and is still ongoing. But what constitutes a genocide? This have been the debate for many countries since the 1940's.
The word genocide is divided into two words, geno meaning " race" with the Latin word cide meaning killing. According to the United Nations Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in article II, it is written that genocide is the act of slaughtering group members, causing physical and mental injuries to members of a group, purposely inflicting misery on the group member's way of life, preventing, child birth within the group, and transporting children as cargo. **Genocide has two phases: one, annihilation of one's national culture, traditions, and values and the other, and invading one's nation's culture, traditions and values (Power,2002). The next big question is how does it connect to human rights? Lets answer first..what are human rights? Many people take advantage of it. It is part of our everyday lives. In many countries, we are able to work where we want without being slaves, we are able to speak our opinions, we are even able to marry who we want. But for some countries, what is supposed to be law, is not law there. Not only men, but women and young girls do not have the right to work where they want and are kept as slaves, working everyday, with little food. This violates every article in the Declaration of Human Rights, written by the United Nations. Aren't we all just humans no matter what race, ethnicity, age, gender, or religion? what articles are violated? Article1 All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
